“DEIR HANA, Israel (UPI) — Arabs hurling rocks, flaming torches and firebombs battled Israeli forces in northern Galilee today in the worst outbreak of Arab rioting in Israel since the birth of the Jewish state 27 years ago. Authorities reported six persons were killed, dozens wounded and hundreds arrested as the first general strike by the nation’s minority Arabs crippled commerce in Galilee, West Bank and annexed East Jerusalem. Left-wing Arab officials citing ‘information from the people,’ told of one more death and accused the battle-equipped Israeli troops of provoking the violence… A government communique said troops and police shot three Arab youths to death in Sakhnin Tuesday morning after killing a young Arab man in Araba the night before… Israeli troops fanned out among the olive trees ringing the hilltop village as hundreds of chanting Arabs demonstrated inside Deir Hana. A large cloud of black smoke hung over the town. One reporter managed to get within 200 yards of the demonstrators before being forced by Israeli troops to leave the area. Dozens of gunshots could be heard amid the chants of the demonstrators… refused to let reporters past the outskirts of Deir Hana.”
