“DEIR HANA, Israel (UPI) — Arabs hurling rocks, torches and fire bombs clashed with Israeli troops in northern Galilee today in the worst outbreak of Arab rioting in Israel since the birth of the Jewish state 27 years ago. Authorities said six persons were killed and 69 persons wounded, including 38 policemen and border patrol troops, and hundreds arrested as the first general strike by the nation’s minority Arabs crippled commerce in Galilee, the West Bank and annexed East Jerusalem. Arab and Jewish sources told of flareups across Galilee but the worst of the unrest was at the three-village complex of Deir Hana, Sakhnin and Arabe… Hundreds of Israeli troops backed by armored cars sealed off the villages, drove the rest of Israel and refused to let reporters past the outskirts of Deir Hana. Israeli troops fanned out among the olive trees ringing the hilltop village as demonstrators chanting anti-Israeli slogans gathered… About 10,000 Jordanians marched across the East Bank from Amman to the edge of the Jordan River to show their support for the strike, called to protest the Israeli takeover of thousands of acres of Arab land in Galilee. The Jordanian government closed the Allenby Bridge between the East Bank and West Bank, which Israel captured during the 1967 Middle East War… Tens of thousands of Arab students, teachers and shopkeepers went on strike across Israel. The recently formed ‘Committee to Protect Arab Lands’ called on the 400,000 Arabs living in Israel to honor the 24-hour walkout.”

Six killed, sixty-nine wounded, hundreds arrested, four hundred thousand Arabs living in Israel, and a committee formed to protect Arab land. The headline puts “Worst Arab Riot” in quotation marks and attributes it to nobody.
