9 Palestinians Die in Protests Marking Israel’s Anniversary
Serge Schmemann

Transcribed from the clipping
“Palestinians today marked the 50th anniversary of the creation of Israel, an event they call the catastrophe, with two minutes of silence and several hours of violence during which Israeli forces fired on crowds.”
Context added by this archive
Nine dead on the anniversary. The Palestinian commemoration is two minutes of silence; the paper gives the quotation marks around catastrophe, which it will keep for another twenty years.
