“Once again, after a few years of relatively balanced treatment of the State of Israel and other Jewish concerns, the anti-Israel, anti-Jewish and pro-Arab/Islamic majority at the United Nations has returned to its familiar Orwellianism… the infamous libel that ‘Zionism is racism’ has reared its ugly head in statements by the so-called ‘moderate’ leaders of Iran, who have urged its readoption at the upcoming United Nations World Conference on Racism.… The resolution remained on the official U.N. books until it was rescinded in 1991 at the urging of then President George H.W. Bush, who said the resolution ‘mocks the principles upon which the U.N. was founded.’… Chaim Herzog came to the lectern to publicly rip to shreds a copy of the resolution which ranks alongside the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and the anti-Jewish blood libels of history as among the most vicious anti-Semitic actions of all time.… The infamous ‘Zionism is Racism’ resolution belongs on the ash-heap and in the dustbin of history.”

The page this runs on is an argument with itself. The column is illustrated by a cartoon of the cover of Orwell’s 1984 in which the Party slogans read WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH and ZIONISM IS RACISM. Directly beneath it the paper prints a letter from Hedy Epstein, who grew up in Nazi Germany, objecting to the paper’s own repeated hook-nosed caricatures of Yasser Arafat and comparing them to Der Stuermer. The editor answers in two lines: your point is well-taken, we will attempt to be more respectful in our future cartoons.
