Uprising undermines Arab-Jew experiment
Potential enemies live together in Israel's Neve Shalom, but tensions from the conflict seep in
By JASON KEYSER, Associated Press

Transcribed from the clipping
NEVE SHALOM, Israel — A nearly 30-year experiment by Arabs and Jews in living side by side in this hilltop village is being tested by the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. Neve Shalom, also known by its Arabic name, Wahat al-Salam, means “Oasis of Peace.”
That's something becoming difficult to find in Israel as the divide between Jew and Arab grows wider due to the uprising in the Palestinian territories. It's a sobering turn for the 40 Arab and Jewish families who came to live on the hilltop of small eucalyptus trees in an idealistic demonstration of coexistence.

Date and publication rest on the collector's slide label; no masthead, folio or printed dateline appears on this clipping. Legibility fair; any passage that could not be read is omitted rather than reconstructed.
Context added by this archive
AP staff feature. Vocabulary: 'Arabs and Jews', 'Arab and Jewish families', with 'Palestinians' and 'the Palestinian territories' reserved for outside the Green Line. One ordinary person named and quoted at length: Ahmad Hijazi, 34.
His complaint - that Hebrew dominates and the Education Ministry curriculum emphasises Jewish history - is the 2001 version of the Arabic-language grievance the 2018 group will report as law.
