RAMALLAH, West Bank THE Palestinian uprising that erupted last fall put an abrupt end to Bill Clinton’s efforts to secure a foreign policy legacy — a lasting peace in the Middle East. Almost one year later, scores of Israelis and hundreds of Palestinians have been killed, with thousands wounded. … “I was participating in the first intifada.

For one year and a half I was wanted by the Israelis, living on the run. Sometimes I slept under buildings or trees. During the interrogation they tortured me — beatings, they hung me from a pole. I don’t like to speak about it, because it is very private, and it is the past.

But I remember in particular the ‘zinzana,’ a room the size of a box, so small you can’t lie down, where they put me for a week. “The prison was both good and bad, however. We ran a good education program, which helped me when I went to university.

Some of the books came from the Red Cross, others the prisoners smuggled in without the knowledge of the army. Some materials the prisoners themselves wrote. I read art, economics, psychology, sociology.

How this transcription was made

Transcribed from a scan of the printed page. The date and page number are fixed from the page's own foot, which reads '20 August 5, 2001'; that line is overprinted with a second, offset impression of itself and is illegible at page scale, but resolves cleanly at twenty-two times magnification. The line gives no paper name, and no masthead appears on the scan, so the NEWSPAPER RESTS ON THE SLIDE LABEL plus the section's typography, not on printed evidence. THE EXCERPT CONTAINS AN ELISION, marked with an ellipsis: the article's opening is followed by the first-person text of a sidebar panel at the right of the page, whose italic biographical caption is recorded in photo_caption. THE SECOND QUOTED PARAGRAPH HAS NO CLOSING QUOTATION MARK on the page; the text simply ends, and this has not been repaired. Read from crops magnified to between twelve and twenty-four times page scale.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
