“KAFR KASSEM, Israel — Two days before Israel’s election, boycott is the buzzword among Arabs across Israel… ‘I won’t vote, and neither will 95 percent of the village,’ said Ali Sarsur, 38, a roofer donating his time for the construction of a mosque… In 1956, Israeli riot police enforcing a curfew — Israeli Arabs then lived under military rule — killed 49 villagers for violating the restrictions.”

Context added by this archive

Forty-five years on, the village is a dateline. Named here: Ali Sarsur, a roofer; Jafar Farah of the Mussawa Center; Yazbak, a professor of Palestinian history at Haifa University. One sentence does the history, and it still says the villagers were killed for violating the restrictions.
