“‘It is a clear message to Barak and Sharon that the Arabs have an independent political position,’ said Arab lawmaker Taleb as-Sana. ‘We want to deliver an electric shock to the political system.’… In Israel’s May 1999 election, 77 percent of Arab voters turned out. Of those casting ballots, 95 percent supported Barak.”
