Israel broadens Palestinian offensive
Once the 'Bride of Palestine,' Ramallah a wreck

“RAMALLAH, West Bank – Israeli tanks and troops broadened their offensive into Palestinian areas yesterday with a thrust into the West Bank town of Qalqilya while Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat remained surrounded by a cordon of heavy armor at his headquarters in Ramallah.
Tanks and troop carriers were also reported massing near Bethlehem, and alarmed residents began to stock up on bread and other foods. In Ramallah, roundups of young Palestinian men intensified. Dozens were led away from homes and office buildings shackled by white plastic handcuffs… Life has come to a standstill in Ramallah. Sporadic shooting echoed throughout the day.
Garbage is piling up. Cars smashed by roving tanks lie in twisted heaps. A few burned buildings line major roadways. The curbsides and garden walls have been smashed and utility poles knocked over. Only ambulances, reporters and cats roam the streets. Once known as the Bride of Palestine, Ramallah is a wreck. Soldiers also tried to invade Ramallah Hospital, the city’s biggest.
Hospital workers, led by deputy health minister Munzer Sharif, stood between two tanks that had entered a parking lot outside the emergency room.”
