GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Israeli helicopters fired on several targets in Gaza Strip late Wednesday, including a metal workshop in the south, Palestinian security officials said. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The Israeli army refused to comment on the strikes, which began about three hours after a Palestinian suicide bomber detonated himself at a bus stop in Jerusalem, killing seven others in the second such attack in the city in two days.

The helicopters struck a metal workshop in Khan Yunis as well as points in Jebaliya refugee camp just north of Gaza City and the Gaza City neighborhood of Zeitun, the security officials said on condition of anonymity. Israel has often said that places like metal workshops are used to manufacture bombs and other weapons used by Palestinian militants in attacks on Israelis.

On Wednesday night, ambulances streamed into the crowded streets of Jebaliya camp, the largest refugee camp in the Palestinian territories, where at least one building was damaged. It wasn’t immediately clear what was in the building, but smoke could be seen coming out of a caved-in roof.

Israel TV reported that most of the strikes were in the Khan Yunis area of the southern Gaza Strip. Early Wednesday, Israel announced a major policy shift in response to a suicide bombing Tuesday on a Jerusalem bus that killed 19 Israelis. The new approach was to reoccupy Palestinian areas gradually and stay put until terrorism stops.

How this transcription was made

Full article transcribed; it runs only four narrow columns and ends cleanly. Nothing graphic to summarize. Advertising matter interleaved between the columns (Conestoga Mall, a pet-sitting advertisement, a classified promotion) is excluded. — No masthead on the clipping. This is the lower part of the same page as s084_1 (folio 4-A). The local advertising inside this clipping — "Conestoga Mall," "Dr. J.J. Heavilin Chiropractic Group, P.C.," "382-2222," "Two Paw Prints Pet Sitting 381-7917" — is Grand Island, Nebraska advertising, which is the strongest corroboration of Maria's label anywhere in this slide, but it is still not a masthead. — No date line. Internal chronology matches s084_1: helicopter strikes "late Wednesday," three hours after the Wednesday bus-stop bombing, and "a suicide bombing Tuesday on a Jerusalem bus that killed 19 Israelis." Consistent with a Thursday, June 20, 2002 paper.
