“The crime of genocide is generally associated with mass killing, but international law defines genocide as acts intended ‘to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group.’ One of the five types of acts is ‘deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.’”

The first time in this collection that a mainstream American paper puts the claim about Palestinians in its own pages as a signed argument working from the legal definition. Thirty-four years after it printed Alsop’s headline bare. The paper’s headline keeps the word in quotation marks.
