“JERUSALEM – Israeli undercover troops killed two Palestinians, including a fugitive Islamic militant, in a gun battle at a West Bank firehouse yesterday. Also yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was reported to be trying to arrange a meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush. Sharon, re-elected this week to another term, spoke with Bush by phone about meeting in Washington to discuss a U.S. peace plan that aims to create a Palestinian state by 2005, a senior official in Sharon’s office said on condition of anonymity.”

“Ismail Hamed, 7, lies in a hospital bed in Jabalia after being injured by, Palestinian security forces said, tank shells fired by Israeli tanks yesterday. Israeli tanks are reported to have fired three tank shells, injuring seven Palestinians under the age of 17, two of them seriously. According to witnesses and hospital officials, they children had been playing soccer in an open area between Jabalia and Beit Hanoun. An Israeli military source said the shells had been fired at a group of Palestinians who tried to launch rockets from the same area.” Andrea Comas, Reuters.
