Israeli soldier, Arab militant die in raids
Citing strikes, Hamas says it won't renew 'period of calm'
By Joel Greenberg, Tribune foreign correspondent

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM — An Israeli soldier and a Palestinian militant were killed in separate army raids in the West Bank on Wednesday, and Hamas warned after the killing of one of its operatives Tuesday that it would not renew a cease-fire due to expire at the end of the year.
More than a week of violence has severely shaken the truce and dimmed hopes for a revival of peace efforts after Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in September. Israeli raids and air strikes have killed 15 Palestinians, both militants and civilians, after a Palestinian suicide bombing that killed five Israelis.
The militant Islamic Jihad group said the bombing was revenge for Israel's killing of one of its West Bank commanders. On Wednesday the first Israeli soldier was killed in action since the Gaza withdrawal. Staff Sgt. Yonatan Evron, 20, was shot during the arrest of a Hamas militant at a house in the village of Marka near Jenin in the northern West Bank, the army said. Brig.
Gen. Yair Golan, commander of Israeli forces in the West Bank, said that after the militant was taken into custody, a gunman opened fire at troops surrounding the house, killing the soldier. In another army raid near Jenin in the town of Qabatiyeh, soldiers exchanged fire with Palestinian gunmen, killing Rafat Turkman, 22, from the militant Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

Clipped column, not a full page. Dateline strip above the headline reads 'THURSDAY NOVEMBER 3, 2005', which matches Maria's label (3 Nov 2005 was a Thursday). The paper's own name does not appear on the clipping; attribution to the Chicago Tribune rests on the credit line 'Tribune foreign correspondent' and the sign-off 'jogreenberg@tribune.com'. Golan is 'Brig.
Gen.' here, as on 14 July. Photo caption at foot: 'Israeli artillery fires into the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. Rocket fire at Israel from Gaza also has resumed, jeopardizing the truce.' (AP photo by Kevin Frayer). The two named dead, Staff Sgt.
Yonatan Evron and Rafat Turkman, are a soldier and a man the paper identifies as a militant, so neither is recorded as an ordinary individual.
