Gaza Strip: Israeli air strikes
GAZA STRIP · ISRAELI AIR STRIKES · Palestinian women human shields
Associated Press, Beit Hanoun

Transcribed from the clipping
“BEIT HANOUN, Gaza Strip — Housewife Tahrir Shahin left her seven children sleeping at home Friday morning and did something out of the ordinary: She marched into a combat zone, along with hundreds of other Palestinian women.
The women, dressed in long robes and headscarves, were responding to appeals by the local Hamas radio station that they try to rescue Palestinian gunmen trapped in a local mosque surrounded by Israeli troops. By nightfall, two women were dead and at least 10 wounded, including Shahin, whose left leg was amputated above the knee because of a severe gunshot wound.
Shahin, 36, said she had no regrets but was saddened by the loss of a limb… In another new tactic for Gaza, troops have rounded up hundreds of men for questioning, releasing most of them but detaining dozens, the army official said.
On Friday evening, for example, soldiers ordered men between the ages of 16 and 46 in Beit Hanoun’s Al Masri neighborhood to report to the local agricultural school for questioning.”
Context added by this archive
The headline is three words with no verb: Palestinian women human shields. Underneath it the reporting does something the headline does not — it gives one of them a name, an age, a job, seven children and an amputated leg, and then lets her say what she thought about it. Tahrir Shahin is one of the named ordinary Palestinians in this archive.
The phrase in the headline is the one this archive follows for twenty years as it changes sides: see the human shields section. Note also what the caption does with the killing — witnesses said — and what the last paragraph reports without comment: every man between 16 and 46 in one neighborhood ordered to report to a school.
