JERUSALEM — Egypt worked diplomatically and on the ground to restore its breached border with the Gaza Strip on Sunday, tightening checkpoints and choking off supplies to curb buying by Palestinians coming across the frontier for the fifth day.

The Egyptians have invited Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and the rival Fatah faction of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for separate talks in Cairo on resolving the Gaza border crisis.

The breach of the border by Hamas militants last week has undermined an Israeli blockade of Gaza and given the Islamic group leverage in discussions of future arrangements at the Egypt-Gaza frontier.

Hamas says it wants to work out a new border-crossing arrangement with the Egyptians and Fatah, which would ease the isolation of Gaza since the Islamic group seized control there in June.

Abbas has rejected talks with Hamas, saying it must roll back its takeover of Gaza, and has proposed posting his own forces at the territory’s border crossings — an unlikely prospect without Hamas agreement. Abbas discussed the border situation with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday and is to meet Wednesday in Cairo with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

A Hamas delegation is expected in Cairo the same day. After meeting Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Sunday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said that Egypt “will take the necessary actions and measures to control the border with Gaza soon.”

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead or date line, so its date and newspaper rest on the record it arrived with, not on anything visible in the scan.

Context added by this archive

Date check: No masthead, folio or printed date appears on this clipping — it is trimmed to the article and its photograph. The story is datelined Jerusalem with events “on Sunday”, consistent with a Monday paper; Jan. 28, 2008 was a Monday.

Nothing on the clipping names the newspaper, though the credit line “TRIBUNE CORRESPONDENT” and the sign-off e-mail “jogreenberg@tribune.com” are consistent with pub “Chicago Tribune”.
