The headline has a toll that mounts and an offensive that persists, and neither of those verbs needs a person. Underneath, the reporting names the army in its first independent clause — since Israel began its latest offensive — and counts the family: eight, four of them children. The standfirst does the same.
As with the Cincinnati pages of 2009, the difference is not what the paper knew.
