New Israeli law creates more division, conflict
BY H.D. URIEL SMITH

How this transcription was made
Date and publication rest on the collector's slide label; no masthead, folio or printed dateline appears on this clipping. Filed under the archive’s spelling; the page prints “Lexington Herald Leader”. Legibility fair; any passage that could not be read is omitted rather than reconstructed.
Context added by this archive
2018 GROUP. Headline phrase for the law: 'New Israeli law' only - the headline names neither 'nation-state' nor 'Jewish', and names no one who loses anything. The phrase 'Jewish nation-state law' DOES appear, in the photo caption.
ARABIC DEMOTION: yes, and in the caption rather than buried - 'which downgrades the standing of Arabic from an official to a “special” language.' PALESTINIANS NAMED AS AFFECTED: the caption's term is 'Israeli Arabs'; in the body the author's term is 'the Palestinian Arabs', in the sentence (read at 6x, not transcribed into the excerpt because its surrounding paragraph could not be read continuously) that the law 'has placed the Palestinian Arabs under an apartheid system.' That is the only use of 'apartheid' by a named individual writer in the batch, and it is a Lexington rabbi writing it.
Worth a re-scan specifically to recover that paragraph verbatim. PHOTO CAPTION (verbatim): “Israeli Arabs and their supporters protest in Tel Aviv on Aug. 11 against Israel's Jewish nation-state law, which downgrades the standing of Arabic from an official to a “special” language.”

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-2018-047.
