Transcribed from the clipping

Jaffa, Palestine, Dec. 28. — Jules Vedrines, the French aviator, passed over this port on his way to Cairo. His appearance caused consternation among the inhabitants, most of whom were ignorant of the existence of flying machines.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan at 2.6x; the excerpt is the entire item, which is bounded by ornamental rules. The clipping carries no masthead, no folio and no page number, so the newspaper rests on the hand-typed slide label alone. The day is supported without being printed: the dateline is “Jaffa, Palestine, Dec. 28.”, which a 29 December paper carries in the ordinary way. THE YEAR IS NOT PRINTED ON THE CLIPPING. The label’s 1913 fits the one externally checkable fact on the page, Jules Védrines’s Paris–Cairo flight, which was flown in the closing days of 1913 — but that is corroboration from general knowledge and not something read off the scan. THE NEWSPAPER IS NEW TO THIS ARCHIVE. This archive holds two other El Paso titles, a different paper and its successor, and this one is neither; it must not be folded into either on the strength of the shared city. “Aeroplane” and the unaccented “Vedrines” are as printed.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1913-005.
