“Foundations for a ewish nation in Palestine were laid in the British mandate recently made public… No prejudice against non-Jews. English, Arabic and Hebrew the official languages… The picture is of Jerusalem… Note the airplane; it is the only thing that gives it a modern touch.”

The photograph shows a densely built city — houses, balconies, shuttered windows, a street, domes and towers — in which tens of thousands of people lived. The caption’s closing instruction is that the only modern thing in it is the British aeroplane overhead. Nothing in that sentence is false. The people are in the photograph and not in the caption. “a ewish nation” is the paper’s dropped letter. The summary of the mandate in the paper’s own words — no prejudice against non-Jews — is the fourth instance in this archive of the majority being named by subtraction.
