“It is not good for the indigenous Arabs, who are bewildered by its injustice. Nor is it good for the indigenous Jews… When the last foreign Zionist has departed the Palestinian Jew will be forced to bear for a generation the burden of Zionist folly… What are 79,000 Jews in a population of 755,000? They are drops on the Arab ocean… The Arab nation is ironically watching the last agonies of the great Zionist delusion. These sons of the soil inherit an age-old tradition and culture.”
Context added by this archive
James Douglas, editor of the Sunday Express, reported at length. He is contemptuous of Zionism throughout and had no stake in calling Arabs indigenous; he uses the word of both populations in one sentence. The phrase the Palestinian Jew, set against the foreign Zionist, is direct evidence that before the word narrowed it belonged to the place and to everyone in it.
