“…It is not on these matters that the bulk of the society’s attention is being spent at present, however. Just now its political commission is directing all its strength toward securing the passage of a law prohibiting all Jewish immigration into Palestine.

‘During the war the United States prohibited immigration,’ they say; ‘why can’t we prohibit Jewish immigratiln?’

War against Zionism. They are determined to fight Zionism to the end, even though Palestine is bathed in blood before the end comes. With them, it is a matter of keeping their country from being taken out from under their feet and sold to an alien race.

In this, they come into direct clash with the intended future of over 50 Zionist colonies already established in Palestine. The most fmous of these colonies is Tel-Aviv at Jaffa. This is the particular pride of Zionism.

It is a suburb of Jaffa with broad streets, lined with well-built bouses surrounded by little gardens and characterized by an unmistakable atmosphere of western neatness. Its administration is carried on by a town council elected by its inhabitants…”

Clair Price, the correspondent who a year earlier had written the sentence They are Palestinians, reporting what the Palestinian political commission was actually doing in July 1919: campaigning for a law to stop Jewish immigration, and arguing it by American precedent — the United States had stopped immigration during the war, so why not here.

The headline stack over it is four decks long and every one of them is the Palestinian case: that Palestinians are bitter on the point of Jewish colonization, that Hebrews have the same claim on the land as Indians have to New York or Arabs to Spain, and that the natives are wondering whether they are to be displaced again now that the Turk has been driven out.

The sentence in the body is the one the headline is made from: even though Palestine is bathed in blood before the end comes.
