Revolt, bullets, weird, wild answers and keyhole interviews greeted officials on their job

“Many an Arab took the opportunity, when he saw a representative of the government in his home, to ask for a job, jobs for his sons and jobs for his nephews in the government service. Sometimes he refused to answer questions unless assured such jobs. Others made the best of the visit by complaining about the unfair taxes and demanding a reduction.”

A Sunday feature about the mechanics of counting people, run for its comedy. One photograph shows the door of the Palestine Census Office, its purpose announced in English, Hebrew and Arabic. The joke needs a population to be funny.
