You Never Would Have Dreamt What Happened When They Started Taking Census in Jerusalem
Revolt, bullets, weird, wild answers and keyhole interviews greeted officials on their job

“It was on the day of the actual census-taking that the real tribulations of the enumerators were to be encountered. Chief Census Officer Mills announced the count was to be made at midnight. This hour was chosen because in the cities most people are indoors at that time… Every householder was warned to keep a light in the house that night. This was in order to keep father awake and also to help the enumerator find his way to the houses. For after sunset the villages (and 70 per cent of the Palestine population lives in villages) are wrapped in… There is no electricity or… small towns.”
