U.N. Unit Condemns Israel for Driving Out Bedouins

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM — Israel was condemned Wednesday by the United Nations truce supervision organization for driving 350 Bedouins out of Israeli territory in mid-September. The Egyptian-Israeli mixed armistice commission charged Israeli troops had killed “some of the Bedouins,” burned their tents and forced them out of the western Negev into Egyptian territory.
Earlier in September an Israeli officer was killed in the western Neger while on patrol. The Israelis contended that members of this Bedouin tribe had murdered the officer. Israeli troops were sent in search of the killers. According to the Israeli army version, these troops were fired on by the Bedouins, the troops retaliated and three Bedouins were killed.
The others fled across the border, the Israelis said. Since the Sinai campaign Israel has boycotted the Egyptian-Israeli mixed armistice commission. No Israelis were present at the meeting, which was held on the border.
The Azazme tribe, whose members were involved in the incident, has for years wandered about in the desert area of the western Negev and western Sinai without regard for the border.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead or date line, so its date and newspaper rest on the record it arrived with, not on anything visible in the scan.

Date check: No masthead or folio line on this clipping — it is a three-column cut. The only standing line is the credit “Special From the New York Times” above the dateline. No date appears on the scan, so 1959-10-08 cannot be confirmed; the text says the condemnation came “Wednesday” and refers to an expulsion “in mid-September”.
