ISRAEL EXPANDS HOMES FOR ARABS
New Nazareth Houses Will Be Permanent Quarters for ‘Internal Refugees’
By SETH S. KING, Special to The New York Times.

Transcribed from the clipping
NAZARETH, Israel, May 25—On one of the stony hillsides on which this ancient town is draped, workmen were putting the last fittings into rows of small, two-family concrete houses this week. Beside them, other houses, of the same blocky design, were already occupied by Christian Arab families who have lived for the last ten years in Nazareth.
The construction of these houses is part of the Israeli Government’s new effort to resettle permanently as many as possible of the 20,000 “internal refugees” left over from the Arab-Israeli war. Units to house 250 refugee families in seven Israeli Arab communities have been built or will be completed by the end of this summer.
The remaining 1,750 families that the Government says are inadequately housed will be provided for during the next two years, if they can be pursuaded to participate in the program. Some of these Arab refugees fled during the fighting from their villages to other villages that remained in Israeli territory when the armistice agreements were signed in 1949.
The rest are persons who were ordered to move from their villages, most of which were in border military zones, and were made to settle elsewhere a year or two after the fighting ended. During the last ten years all these refugee families have either not been permitted to return to their original villages or have been unable to do so because those villages were destroyed.
This resettlement program in no way applies to the estimated total of 800,000 Palestinian Arabs who fled from what is now Israel and are still living, many with the help of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, in the surrounding Arab countries.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by optical character recognition and not by a person. The clipping carries no masthead or date line, so its date and newspaper rest on the record it arrived with, not on anything visible in the scan.
Context added by this archive
Date check: No masthead or folio line is on this clipping — it is a trimmed single column. The credit line under the byline reads “Special to The New York Times.”, which agrees with `pub`. The dateline reads “NAZARETH, Israel, May 25”, consistent with publication on 1959-05-31 (a Sunday) though not proving it; no year appears on the clipping.
