BEDOUINS BEAT 2 JEWS IN PALESTINE DISPUTE
Tension Over the Possession of Land Grows—Police Make Several Arrests.

Transcribed from the clipping
JERUSALEM, July 21.—An ugly situation appears to be developing between Bedouin squatters and Jewish farmers in the northwestern section of the valley of Jezreel. Already there have been several encounters, mostly in land disputes.
About twelve Bedouins dwelling in the vicinity of Kuskus Taboun today attacked a Jewish watchman on Jewish land in Sheikh Abreikh village, beating him severely. When the watchman’s son came to the rescue he also was knocked unconscious.
The police later arrested a number of Bedouins, two of whom allegedly confessed participating in the attack because of the watchman’s refusal to allow Bedouins to uproot trees. The tension among Bedouins in the disputes over the possession of land is running high.
Recently the police had difficulty in averting assaults against Jewish villages by large crowds of Bedouins who had trespassed with flocks on Jewish cultivated areas. The Bedouins asserted they were entitled to do so and refused to quit until forcibly dispersed.
It is felt they are being instigated by persons who are remaining in the background and who desire to take the matter to the courts in order to challenge the validity of Jewish land purchases.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 3.2x to 7x by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by OCR and not by a person. No masthead or folio; the date follows the dateline 'JERUSALEM, July 21.' plus one day and the year rests on the slide label. The paper is named on the page by the credit line 'Wireless to THE NEW YORK TIMES.'. Two passages are set in italic mid-sentence in otherwise roman body text, which reads as a compositor's error rather than emphasis; they are transcribed as plain text. Nobody on either side is named: not the Bedouins, not the Jewish watchman who is beaten, not his son. The claim that the Bedouins are 'being instigated by persons who are remaining in the background' is carried on 'It is felt', with no source.
