Police Fire On Crowd Of Unruly Arabs
Several Are Killed And Wounded At Jaffa, Palestine — The Arabs Protest Against A Recent Increase In Jewish Immigration.

“Police today fired upon large unruly crowds of Arabs demonstrating against a recent increase in Jewish immigration, killing an undetermined number and wounding others. A number of police also were injured… A crowd armed with firearms, sticks, stones and other missiles endeavored to break through a police cordon. After making several baton charges, the police opened fire… (Palestine is under a British mandate.) Early in the forenoon the Arabs declared a general strike, closed their shops and went to the mosques.”

One Associated Press story of 27 October 1933, printed in four American papers. The copy is identical in all four; only the headline changes. Two of the four delete the police from the headline, and one paper's second line turns a protest against an immigration increase into a demonstration ‘Against Jews.’ This is the only one of the four whose second line states accurately what the crowds were protesting.
