POLICE FIRE UPON UNRULY CROWDS IN JAFFA, PALESTINE
Undetermined Number Are Killed and Others Wounded in Demonstration Against Jews.

“Police today fired upon large unruly crowds of Arabs demonstrating against a recent increase in Jewish immigration, killing an undetermined number and wounding others. A number of police also were injured… A crowd armed with firearms, sticks, stones and other missiles endeavored to break through a police cordon. After making several baton charges, the police opened fire… (Palestine is under a British mandate.) Early in the forenoon the Arabs declared a general strike, closed their shops and went to the mosques.”

One Associated Press story of 27 October 1933, printed in four American papers. The copy is identical in all four; only the headline changes. Two of the four delete the police from the headline, and one paper's second line turns a protest against an immigration increase into a demonstration ‘Against Jews.’ This printing names the police in the headline and the dead in the line beneath it — and is the one whose second line says the demonstration was ‘Against Jews,’ where the copy says it was against a recent increase in Jewish immigration.
