Transcribed from the clipping

Jerusalem, Nov. 14.—The British army occupied the Arab village of Hadraht in Nazareth hills today in its drive against terrorism, and entered two other villages in Samaria. The army also demolished eight houses in Gaza as punishment for shooting of two British soldiers, one of whom died Saturday.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan at 2.7x; the excerpt is the whole item, which is complete between rules. The clipping carries no masthead, no folio and no page number, so the newspaper rests on the hand-typed slide label alone. The day is supported without being printed: the dateline is “Jerusalem, Nov. 14.” and the army occupied the village “today”, which a 15 November paper carries in the ordinary way; one internal detail agrees, in that a British soldier is said to have “died Saturday” and 12 November 1938 was a Saturday. THE YEAR IS NOT PRINTED and 1938 is the label’s. THE NEWSPAPER IS NEW TO THIS ARCHIVE: no record under this title existed before and no masthead is available to settle the form of the name. “The Arab village of Hadraht in Nazareth hills” is what the wire printed, read twice at 2.7x with the letters clear. The name is not one this reader recognises among the Galilee villages, and no correction or identification is proposed here; it would be worth checking against the British mandate village lists. The item carries no wire credit of any kind — no AP, no UP, no INS — and “its drive against terrorism” is the wire’s own phrase in its own voice, not an attribution to the British army.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1938-023.
