ARAB VILLAGE DESTROYED

Transcribed from the clipping
A view of the actual destruction by high explosives of the Arab village of Miiar, in the hills of northern Palestine. The village was blown up by British forces who conducted a punitive expedition into the hills as a reprisal for Arab terrorism on Jewish settlements in the Holy Land. (INS Photo)
How this transcription was made
NOTHING ON THIS CLIPPING IS DATED AND NOTHING ON IT NAMES A NEWSPAPER. It is a cut photograph, its caption head and its five-line caption, with a sliver of a neighbouring column down each side; the top and bottom edges were read at 8x looking for a folio and there is none. The newspaper, the city and the date of 12 November 1938 all rest on the hand-typed label of the slide the scan arrived on. The only printed attribution of any kind is “(INS Photo)”, which names the picture agency and not the paper that ran it. THE PAIRING IS ALSO UNRESOLVED: the slide names two papers and two dates for its two images, and since neither image carries a masthead or a date, neither can be fixed to its half of the label from the page. This record follows the order the images sat in, supported only by the argument that the other image is an Associated Press radiophoto whose caption dates the demolition to 27 October, and that a London radiophoto reaching print on 2 November is a likelier turnaround than one reaching it on 12 November. That is plausibility, not evidence, and until a folio turns up the two records should be treated as interchangeable. The caption spells the village Miiar with a doubled i; the Associated Press caption on the same slide spells it Miar. Both are kept as printed. The village is the one usually written Mi’ar, in the Galilee between Acre and the Sea of Galilee.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1938-025.
