Transcribed from the clipping

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sunday (AP)—Work will start soon of the Yarmuk River irrigation project which will offer jobs to 15,000 Palestine refugees. Technical advice is being provided under the U. S. Point 4 plan and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency is providing the funds.

How this transcription was made

THE PAGE AND THE LABEL DO NOT AGREE ABOUT THE DATE AND THE LABEL’S DATE HAS BEEN KEPT. There is no masthead, no folio and no page number. The dateline, read at 2.5x, is “BEIRUT, Lebanon, Sunday (AP)” — a weekday and no calendar date, which is the form a paper uses for a dispatch filed for that same morning’s edition. The label dates the printing 5 August 1952, which was a TUESDAY. A Sunday-filed dispatch under a Sunday dateline normally appears in a Sunday or Monday paper; 3 August 1952 was the Sunday and 4 August the Monday. Either the label’s day is wrong by one or two, or this paper ran a two-day-old agency filler under its original dateline, which papers do. Nothing on the clipping settles it, and nothing on it names a paper, a city or a year either: the attribution to this newspaper rests on the label and on the other two images on the slide having been fixed to the label’s other two entries by their own datelines. The excerpt is the whole item, a two-sentence agency filler. “Work will start soon of the Yarmuk River irrigation project” is as printed.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1952-006.
