“There are an estimated 850,000 of them, living in poverty and idleness on the fringes of Palestine… THERE ARE, according to independent and reliable sources, 170,000 heads of families among the 850,000 refugees, 70 per cent farmers.”

An Associated Press information graphic in which 821,000 people are drawn as faceless robed figures standing on four countries, under the words Caution: Inflammable. The 1929 map gave Arabs a dot apiece; this one makes them the territory’s principal hazard. The story’s own sourcing says seventy per cent of them are farmers, two paragraphs after the word idleness.
