Absentee Landlord Only Real Problem In Colonization, Zionists Here Told

“There is no real Arab problem in so far as the native Arab and the colonization of Palestine by the Jews is concerned, according to Judge Julian W. Mack, federal judge of New York, and a leading member of the Zionist organization of America, who spoke before a crowded auditorium at the Young Men’s Hebrew Association Sunday. ‘No injustice is being done the native Arab by the colonization of Palestine, for to the native Arab the bit of land represented by Palestine in the vast area of Arabia and Syria will not be missed,’ Judge Mack said. ‘It is the rich, absentee Arab landlord who is fearful. In the coming of an educated class this landlord sees a menace to the resigned and submissive ignorance of the nomadic Arab, and he is worried.’ Not Taking Land. ‘The Jews are not taking land from the Arabs, for there is no land to take. They are buying land, buying it with the money the Jews over the world are contributing to the Jewish national fund. The charter of this organization does not allow it to sell the land, and so this land will never become a matter for private speculation. It is leased to the colonists, in hereditary leases often, so the land can be cultivated.’ From the beginning of the Jewish colonization of Palestine, Judge Mack added, the work has been one of practical idealism. A United States federal judge, speaking to a crowded hall in Alabama in January 1927, giving the argument in its plainest form: that the land of Palestine will not be missed by Arabs who have Arabia and Syria. In the same breath he describes the people he says will not miss it as living in resigned and submissive ignorance. The paragraph headed Not Taking Land sets out the Jewish National Fund mechanism exactly — land bought with worldwide donations, never resold by charter, leased to colonists in hereditary leases.
