General Deeds and Mrs Silverman Address Organizations on Country’s Progress

“Interesting addresses in regard to the rebuilding of Palestine were given at a luncheon meeting at the Standard club Thursday by General Sir Wyndham Deeds, chief secretary in the British administration in Palestine 1920-23, and Mrs. Archibald Silverman, vice-president of the American Jewish congress and of the national Hadassah organization, who are in the south in the interest of the united Palestine appeal… Represented at the meeting were five Jewish organizations, Temple Beth-Or, Temple Agudath Israel, the B’Nai B’Rith organization, the Council of Jewish Women and the local Hadassah chapter. Mrs. Sanford Marcus, president of the Hadassah chapter, presided… General Deeds told of the importance with which the work in Palestine is looked upon abroad. He expressed the opinion unofficially that it constitutes one of the most important tasks underway abroad by the British… Two important aspects of the conditions in Palestine he discussed were the Arab question and the practicability of the work going forward in Palestine. The Arab question, he said, is rapidly disappearing and in his opinion will continue to do so as the Arabs are feeling more and more that development of Palestine by the Jews will redound to their good as well as to that of the Jews. The speaker stated that the work of rebuilding Palestine is practical and is not setting up an artificial, unenduring life.
