Communists’ Reactions Differ On Zionism-Racism Resolution

“The Italian Communist party, the largest in the West, differed with Moscow and criticized the U.N. General Assembly vote equating Zionism with racism, saying it was damaging to the Arab cause. The Soviet news agency Tass hailed the resolution, and said Zionism is racism of the same kind that was practiced in Hitler’s Germany… French Communists straddled the issue, indicating that opposition to Zionism was not the same thing as advocating the destruction of the Israeli state… AFL-CIO President George Meany said, ‘It was a cowardly, reprehensible act, reminiscent of the days of Hitler and appeasement.’ He added: ‘The U.S. Congress must immediately re-evaluate continued United States participation in the U.N. How long can the American taxpayer be expected to bear a disproportionate share of the U.N.’s bills when it produces this kind of evil?’… The Canadian House of Commons, in a step similar to that taken Tuesday by the U.S. Congress, unanimously condemned the U.N. action and said it was dangerous to the continued survival of the world organization. The resolution was greeted by cheers from both sides of the Commons. The president of the U.S. Catholic Conference, Archbishop Joseph Bernadin of Cincinnati, expressed ‘profound disagreement’ and ‘great disappointment’ at the vote. Mayor Pete Wilson of San Diego said he has quit the board of the United Nations Association of San Diego in protest and said the United States ought to pull out of the United Nations itself.”
