“The Italian Communist party, the largest in the West, differed with Moscow and criticized the U.N. General Assembly vote equating Zionism with racism, saying it was damaging to the Arab cause… The Italian Communist organ Unita said, ‘for reasons of principle we do not accept the equation between Zionism and racism.’ ‘We regard this . . . as damaging the Arab cause itself, which thus loses rather than gains allies in those countries of Western Europe from which a positive contribution might have come toward a just and peaceful settlement in the Middle East,’ the newspaper said. The Soviet news agency Tass hailed the resolution… ‘One need hardly cite other facts to prove that daily practice of Zionism is racism pure and simple of the same kind that is being practiced today by South Africa and Rhodesia and was practiced in the not too distant past by Hitler’s Germany,’ it added. Tass cited the eviction of Palestinians from their own land as testimony ‘to the fact that the Israeli Zionist authorities have made anti-Semitism’s methods their own.’… AFL-CIO President George Meany called the vote ‘a cowardly, reprehensible act, reminiscent of the days of Hitler and appeasement’… Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, at a news conference in Pittsburgh, Pa., called the vote ‘extremely unhelpful and highly irresponsible’ in efforts to bring lasting peace to the Middle East. He said, however, ‘We must now not swing to the other extreme of not realizing some of the benefits that the U.N., with all of its failings, still has for the United States.’… Iraq and Libya told the 138-nation assembly of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome that Israel should be expelled from the big U.N. agency. ‘There is no place for racism in this humane organization,’ said Iraqi Agricultural Minister Hassan Fahmy Jumah. But he offered no specific resolution.”
