Palestinian Jews Call A General Strike

“Jerusalem, Nov. 14—(INS)—British troops and local police stood by today for possible trouble resulting from a general strike called by Palestinian Jews in protest against the statement yesterday at London by foreign minister Ernest Bevin of Britain. Reaction to Bevin’s statement was swift among Jews in the Holy Land.
They immediately called a general strike and curfew from Wednesday noon until midnight, during which time all of the Jewish faith were urged to stay away from shops, factories and schools. (London Evening newspapers said that the curfew imposed during the strike suddenly was revoked to enable the strikers to hold protest meetings and demonstrations.)
Traffic between towns was to be held up and all the above establishments closed. Thursday was declared a day or prayer and fasting. In London, Bevin had suggested that the Holy Land eventually be placed under the trusteeship of the United Nations, and revealed that a joint Anglo-American commission of inquiry would examine the question of European Jewry and Palestine.
A broadcast by a secret transmitter of the Jewish defense organization in Jerusalem announced that ‘no matter what decisions are taken, the Jewish people will return to build their homeland.’”
