UN Turns Down Pleas of Arabs

“Lake Success, N. Y. —(U.P.)— The Arab states were defeated today in two more attempts to force the United Nations to consider the independence of Palestine and a spokesman threatened that they might walk out of UN ‘so far as Palestine is concerned.’
The political committee of the general assembly slapped down proposals by Russia and Poland which would have instructed the UN Palestine inquiry commission to consider establishing an ‘independent democratic state of Palestine.’ In view of the action there was speculation that the five Arab states might stage their protest demonstration today.
They apprenly had lost their last chance to include the independence issue in the instructions for the Palestine inquiry. Faris El Khouri of Syria, considered spokesman for the Arab bloc, said the Arab states were considering a policy of ‘non-cooperation’ if they were not given their way.
He claimed the UN Palestine probe could not possibly succeed if the Arabs did not cooperate.”
