“UNITED NATIONS, N. Y., Dec. 1 (AP).—Israel announced today it will pull back more than 30 miles from the Suez Canal by Monday to let the United Nations Emergency Force move in. It also announced it has withdrawn another brigade, possibly 3,000 men, from Egypt to make its total withdrawals about 9,000. These moves still left Israeli troops in occupation of the Gaza Strip and much of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula despite U. N. resolutions demanding they all withdraw into Israel. Israeli Delegate Abba Eban gave notice of the withdrawal and the pullback in a letter to U. N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold… ‘As a result of the progressive withdrawal of our forces,’ he wrote, ‘there will be no Israeli forces anywhere within a wide belt of territory (about 50 kilometers) in proximity to the Suez Canal along its entire length by the morning of December 3.’… An Israeli delegation spokesman told a reporter this and the two previous brigades had not been withdrawn as units but had been thinned out through demobilization of individual soldiers.”
