“The Voice of Israel, Jerusalem radio station, warned the refugee-packed Gaza Strip that it soon would be cut off from Egypt. It asserted Israeli military operations in the Sinai Peninsula soon would be concluded with the defeat of Egyptian forces. About 250,000 Arab refugees from Palestine’s 1948 war are packed in the 26-mile-long, 8-mile-wide area sandwiched between the Mediterranean coast and Israel’s Negeb Desert. The Israelis claimed to have destroyed scores of Egyptian vehicles in air attacks on convoys east of Ismailia, and claimed their forces had reached within 10 miles of the Suez Canal, the ‘ultimatum’ line set by Britain and France.”
