Nations Absorb Arab Refugees, Moslem Charges
United Press International, Atlantic City

Transcribed from the clipping
“ATLANTIC CITY N. J. (UPI)—Seif Eddine Zu’pi, mayor of Nazareth, Israel, charged Wednesday night that more than one half of Arab refugees supposedly in camps in nations near Israel have been absorbed into the population of those countries but propagandists have been ‘secretive’ about it.
Zu’pi, a Moslem, said Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon now hold some 300,000 in the camps but have not told the story of the absorption of the majority of the refugees from Israel. He said the Arabs would not return to Israel ‘even if they were offered the opportunity.’
Zu’pi is in the United States to attend the International Mayor’s Conference in Washington. The 150,000 Arabs who live in Israel today, Zu’pi said, have full citizenship rights and are ‘loyal citizens.’”

A Palestinian mayor of Nazareth, touring the United States, arguing the opposite of what most Palestinian voices in this archive argue. The paper prints him without a reply.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
