“Nothing I have ever seen in Hong Kong, India or elsewhere compares to the frightful conditions of Camp Wavell and Gouraud, near Baalbeck in Lebanon… No one can tell me that the Arabs want to remain in this type of camp. I don’t believe it… Americans do not know the truth about the Arab refugee situation.”

An Arab-American weekly reporting a gift from the anti-Zionist American Council for Judaism. Henry S. Moyer, the fund’s president, had been to the camps. The loans bought sewing machines, carpenter tools, fruit and grocery stands and cobblers’ equipment — the same object the Mennonites brought to Surif in 1970 and the same one the Surif Women’s Cooperative was still working with in 2023.
