Arab Refugees Joining Cong Against U.S.

WASHINGTON — The Palestine Liberation Army is sending volunteers from the Arab refugee camps to fight with the Viet Cong against the United States. They go to Red China first for guerrilla training. Meanwhile the United States is paying most of the food bill for their families back home.

The U.S.A. contributes 70 per cent of the United Nations budget for Palestine refugees.

Read from the scan at 4x to 4.5x; the excerpt is the whole of the clipping. NOTHING ON IT IS DATED: no masthead, no folio, no page number, and the dateline is the place word WASHINGTON with no date, so the newspaper and the date of 9 July 1966 rest on the hand-typed slide label alone. The label writes the paper without the definite article this archive’s spelling carries, and the record follows the archive. THE SAME TEXT APPEARS ELSEWHERE IN THIS BATCH, word for word. A clipping from another paper, labelled two days later, carries the same sixty-two words with no difference in wording, punctuation or figures; the two were compared phrase by phrase at magnification. That printing runs the text as one note in a running column under a standing head, with no dateline, continuing into a further item. This printing has lifted the note out of the column, added a WASHINGTON dateline the column did not have, and given it a display headline. THE HEADLINE ON THIS RECORD IS THEREFORE THE PAPER’S OWN and not a wire service’s: a sixty-two-word squib has been made into a front-of-the-paper item. Nothing in the item is attributed to any source — not a department, not an official, not a document.
