Israel Tanks, Planes Win Gaza Coast

“GAZA STRIP (INS) — Israeli troops supported by tanks and planes today smashed Egyptian positions and conquered the 125-square-mile Gaza Strip territory along the Mediterranean coast. The Israeli troops struck the Egyptians from the rear, or southern end, of the strip and raced through the area within three hours. At the moment of this dispatch, 5:30 a. m. (10:30 p. m. EST Thursday) I am watching Israeli guns reduce the Egyptian positions in the town of Gaza, which is near the northern end of the area that Egyptian troops seized in 1948 before the U. N. effected an armistice. Israeli artillery has just hit the main Egyptian gasoline depot northeast of Gaza. A big black cloud of smoke marks the destruction of the depot. The pre-dawn attack began after Israeli planes opened a heavy air bombardment during the night. Artillerymen laid down a barrage and then tanks and armored cars moved into the area quickly and advanced on Khan Yunis, which is near the southern end of the territory and on the ancient road between Palistine and Egypt. A fierce battle developed at Khan Yunis, but the Israelis positions there and moved on to Gaza.”
