NEAR EAST NOTES

Transcribed from the clipping
The Palestine Liberation Army is sending volunteers from the Arab refugee camps to fight with the Viet Cong against the United States. They go to Red China first for guerrilla training. Meanwhile the United States is paying most of the food bill for their families back home. The U.S.A. contributes 70 per cent of the United Nations budget for Palestine refugees. . . .
The night before Saudi Arabia’s King Faisal made his crack against Israel he was entertained at the White House. Among the guests was Mike Feldman, a former White House aide, who has previously acted as unofficial ambassador between Israel and the White House. The invitation was not a mistake. Feldman was deliberately invited to represent the Jewish community.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 2.8x; the excerpt is contiguous and complete, covering both items as the column sets them. NOTHING ON THIS CLIPPING IS DATED: no masthead, no folio, no page number and no dateline of any kind, so the newspaper and the date of 11 July 1966 rest on the hand-typed slide label alone. King Faisal’s state visit to Washington, spoken of here as recent, was in June 1966, which is consistent with a July printing and fixes nothing. THE FIRST ITEM APPEARS ELSEWHERE IN THIS BATCH, word for word, in another paper labelled two days earlier, where it has been lifted out of this column, given a dateline it does not have here and headlined. This is almost certainly the fuller and original form. “NEAR EAST NOTES” is a standing head over a recurring column and not a headline written for this item; it occupies the headline field because a record requires one. The four spaced periods between the two items are the column’s own separator as printed, not an elision made in transcription; there is no elision in this excerpt. Neither item attributes anything to any source, and the column’s closing judgment about who was invited to the White House to represent whom is the columnist’s assertion, recorded as printed.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
