Transcribed from the clipping

NAZARETH, Israel—Jews and Arabs are living together in peace in this ancient town, and the fact that they are doing so is proof that peace is possible in the Middle East. Nazareth has grown rapidly since the establishment of the State of Israel, and for years it has had an in adequate water supply. There are no springs in Nazareth and water sources are far away.

How this transcription was made

Date confirmed on the page (folio). Legibility fair; any passage that could not be read is omitted rather than reconstructed.

Context added by this archive

A reader-correspondent piece: a South Jersey welfare worker writing home from Israel, run with a staff-set headline and dek plus an italic editor's note introducing him. The dek field holds the printed deck only ('Says It Proves Peace Possible In Middle East'); the editor's note and the standing folio are excluded.

People of Palestine are called 'Arabs'; no ordinary individual is named. The framing is the softest in the batch - amity, proof of peace - and makes a useful contrast with the 1949 refugee-camp item.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1955-019.
