Alan Salem Ahmad Native of Palestine Granted Citizenship

Transcribed from the clipping
Alan Salem Ahmad, 26, of 905 North Pearl street, Beaumont, was granted United States citizenship in a naturalization proceeding in U. S. district court here yesterday. The only candidate for citizenship in the ceremony presided over by Judge Lamar Cecil, Mr. Ahmad is a native of Palestine and came to the United States seven years ago.
A resident of Beaumont the past 2 1-2 years, Mr. Ahmad is employed by Sun Oil company as a chemical engineer. He received his engineering degree from the University of Texas. Mr. Ahmad is a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Business and Professional Men’s club and the U. S. army reserve unit here.
The court granted him permission to change his name from Abder-Raouf Salem Sayied Ahmad to Alan Salem Ahmad. The oath of citizenship was administered to him by Tom King, deputy court clerk.
How this transcription was made
Read from the scan at 6.8x to 14x, column by column. The date is printed: the folio across the top of the strip reads “Friday, January 28, 1955” at the right-hand end, read with the contrast stretched, and 28 January 1955 was a Friday. At the left-hand end of the same line the last four letters of the paper’s name survive, “RISE”, with their lower halves cut by the edge of the scan; the rest of the name is off the top of the image. Those four letters fit Enterprise and not Journal, which is weak evidence on its own but points the right way, and the story’s own “here” and “Beaumont” put the paper in the right city. The excerpt is the whole of the article. The lower-case generics in “905 North Pearl street”, “Sun Oil company” and “Business and Professional Men’s club” are this paper’s style and are kept, as is “2 1-2 years” for two and a half. Mr. Ahmad does not speak anywhere in his own naturalisation story: the paper gave him a name, an age and an address, and did not give him a sentence.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
