A bitter legacy of the war was the expulsion of several hundred thousand Palestine Arabs from their villages to slums on the outskirts of cities in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan and to the Gaza strip. Natural increase brought the refugee population to over 1,000,000 - fertile soil for fanatical anti-Israel agitation by Arab nationalism.
