Arab merchants and shopkeepers i nthe former Jordanian sector of Jerusalem padlocked their doors Monday in protest against Israel’s unification of the city. Nearly all the more than two thousand shops and stores inside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem and in the new part of the Arab sector were closed.
The shutdown was called by a “Defense Committee of Arab Jerusalem” in leaflets distributed Sunday. Israel officials said the strike was instigated from outside Jerusalem and that it was called to coincide with the arrival in Israel of United Nations representative Nils G. Gussing, who arrived in Jerusalem Sunday from Amman.
Israel and Jordan meanwhile resolved a deadlock that had been blocking repatriation of an estimated 260 thousand Arabs who fled from the west bank of the Jordan River during and after the six-day war. But Egypt postponed the transfer of Egyptian civilians from the Israeli-occupied Sinai desert into Egypt.
Cairo newspapers reported an Arab summit conference will be held in Khartoum, Sudan, strating August 29. The Foreign Ministers of the 13 Arab nations ended a conference in Khartoum Saturday with a cali for the meeting and a pledge to “eradicate all vestiges of Zionist imperialist aggression.”
How this transcription was made
Transcribed from a scan of the printed column. PUBLICATION NAME CORRECTED AGAINST THE ARCHIVE'S OWN SPELLING: the slide label reads 'Omaha World Herald' without a hyphen, and the archive's twenty-three existing records for this paper all read 'Omaha World-Herald'. The hyphenated form has been used, because the unhyphenated one would have been ingested as a separate newspaper and moved the archive's published count of papers. Note the limit of that correction: NOTHING ON THIS SCAN NAMES THE NEWSPAPER - there is no masthead, running head or folio - so the attribution to Omaha rests on the slide label alone, and only the spelling has been settled, not the paper. The date is likewise not printed; it is corroborated from inside the story, which reports the strike on 'Monday', leaflets distributed 'Sunday' and a foreign ministers' conference that ended in Khartoum 'Saturday'. The Arab foreign ministers' Khartoum conference ended on Saturday 5 August 1967, making the Sunday the 6th and the Monday the 7th, which fits a 7 August evening paper. Three printed errors have been kept exactly as set and NOT repaired: 'i nthe' for 'in the', 'strating' for 'starting', and 'cali' for 'call'. Read from crops magnified to ten times page scale.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.
The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.
