JERUSALEM, Aug. 7—The Arab population of East Jerusalem staged a general strike today against Israeli control of the former Jordanian sector, halting all business activity, including shops and restaurants. It was the most dramatic example of Arab resistance to Israeli occupation since the six-day war ended on June 11.

Every one of East Jerusalem’s business establishments, estimated to total 2,000, remained shuttered during the day. In the twisting, narrow streets of the historic Old City, Arabs lounged outside the closed shops, grinning at passersby as though they were enjoying a private joke. The Israeli authorities kept a watchful eye on the situation.

Reinforced patrols of heavily armed border policemen moved through the Old City. In the late morning, after rumors of an impending Arab demonstration began to circulate, three jeeps with machine guns mounted between the seats rolled into the area. The demonstration did not materialize and there were no reports of incidents.

How this transcription was made

Read from the scan at 7x to 24x by a machine looking at the image of the page, not by OCR and not by a person. No masthead or folio; the date follows the dateline 'JERUSALEM, Aug. 7' plus one day, and the paper is named by the credit line 'Special to The New York Times'. This is a narrow single column, about 112 pixels of type across, and ink is lost at the right-hand column edge and inside some letters: 'control', 'sector', 'Arabs' and one 'the' were read from partial glyphs and context rather than from complete letterforms. The paper's own 'the six-day war ended on June 11' is kept as printed.
