Transcribed from the clipping

ARAB REFUGEE CHILDREN are helped across the wrecked Allenby Bridge over the Jordan River from the Israeli-occupied section of Jordan yesterday. No official count was available but it was the biggest one-day movement of refugees in the 15 days since the cease-fire between Jordan and Israel. (AP Wirephoto by radio from Amman)

How this transcription was made

NOTHING IS PRINTED ON THIS CLIPPING THAT NAMES A PAPER, A CITY OR A DATE. It is a cut photograph and its two-column caption, with no masthead, no folio and no page number, and the caption itself gives no date. Both the newspaper and the date of 24 June 1967 rest entirely on the hand-typed label of the slide the scan arrived on. The caption’s own arithmetic — “the 15 days since the cease-fire between Jordan and Israel” — is consistent with that date and equally consistent with the 25 June of the other clipping on the same slide, so it corroborates nothing. The slide label writes the paper as The Times (Shreveport); that form exists nowhere in this archive, and the record has been filed under the archive’s existing The Times rather than creating a new title. Whether a Shreveport clipping of 1967 belongs under The Times or under the archive’s separate The Shreveport Times cannot be read off this page, because this page has no masthead. The caption is an Associated Press Wirephoto caption radioed from Amman, so its words are the agency’s and will have appeared in other papers.

This record is part of Covering Palestine, an archive of American newspaper clippings about Palestinians, 1724 to 2023. Researched and assembled by Maria Robles.

The clipping belongs to the newspaper that printed it, or to the news agency that supplied the copy. It is reproduced here for research, criticism and commentary. A city here is where the newspaper was published, not where the story came from, and on most records it was taken from the masthead.

Something wrong here, or something you know about this clipping? The archive is still being built and corrections are wanted: maria@rozumstudio.com, quoting CP-1967-050.
